Why we’re called Axiom Maths

In mathematics, an axiom is a statement that is taken to be true, often self-evidently so, from which one can build further argument. They are the simple but powerful truths from which great arguments and proofs are built.
Our mission is to help every child with the heart and head for maths realise the potential of their power. That mission rests on two powerful truths:
- That maths gives us power: to see beyond what others see, to solve unsolvable challenges.
- That this power is for everybody, regardless of your background.
These truths drive everything we do. They are our axioms. That’s why we’re called Axiom Maths.
We started life as Mathematics Education for Social Mobility and Excellence (or MESME). This was the title of the conference that spawned MESME, and the organisation that came out of that conference took on its name. We were focused on testing out early stage ideas about how to support children to become excellent at maths, and didn’t know if what we were working on would be effective enough to scale.
We now have years of experience and learning behind us, and are looking to share that with the rest of the education system. As we start seeking partnerships with schools across the country, it’s the right time for us to think about a long-term name for the charity.
We are still committed to mathematics education for social mobility and excellence. This is what’s set out in our axioms: a belief in the power of maths and a belief that it is for everybody. These commitments stay unchanged.
Our logo
Our logo is inspired by the dragon curve fractal. This is a complex and beautiful pattern that’s built up from a simple initial state (its axiom) and a simple set of production rules. It is a wonderful example of the beauty of mathematics. Our logo is built from the shapes that compose the dragon curve, and you’ll find excerpts of dragon curves in the artwork on our website.
